When people see you at your most vulnerable, you become less of a threat and more… human. After I played Summertime, I opened myself up to my classmates, my school, and the world. I no longer longed to get the notes right. I wanted to play them right. My objectives and my viewpoint changed, and so did my social circles.

Classmates that I knew existed for the last four years, but that I had nothing in common with, came up to me. They started talking to me and asking me about my life, my likes, and my dislikes. Dudes were asking me to carry my violin. I found myself “hanging out” and going to the movies after school.

I thought my mom would trip because I was acting different, or I felt different at least. I felt like I was winning. Notifications from my colleges came back, and I was accepted to both schools. I didn’t care too much about keeping my grade point average up after learning of my acceptance because fuck that.

I was really feeling myself. The musical went great. The spring festival went great. I was looking forward to going away to college. My life was like my violin playing- absolutely musical. I was on cloud nine of high school success… until I saw Kiesha.

“Girl, wassup, superstar?” Kiesha asked me with her eyes happier and bouncier than usual.

“Whatever, girl. How you doing?” I was laughing at her enthusiasm. It was refreshing, overwhelming, and contagious.

“Girl, I’m good. I’m getting my shit ready for prom. How ‘bout you? Who you going to prom with?” She asked.

Damn it, Jade. How could you forget prom? You know, those chicken heads talked about prom every day in history class. How could you forget it? You know what this means?”

“Prom?” I asked nauseously.

“Yes, prom! Oh girl, please don’t tell me that you forgot prom? What the hell is the matter with you?”

“I was too busy getting some happy. I forgot. I don’t want to go anyway so whatever.”

“Look, you gotta go. You don’t want to be one of those losers who are like ‘I should have gone to prom’, do you?”

“No, but I am happy. Isn’t that what you told me to do- get some happy?

“I told you to forget about that asshole that was making you unhappy and making you lose your damn mind. I didn’t say shit about forgetting prom. So what are you going to do?”

“I don’t know. I got four weeks. There are at least a hundred boys that go to our school so I am just going to start asking. Shit, I will even pay for my own ticket and shit.”

“Chick, is you for real? You are too cute to ask someone. Plus, girls don’t ask guys to prom.”

“Girl, it’s almost the new millennium, and you still on that sexist shit? I’m my own person. I can ask whoever da hell I want.”

“Alright, but you’re going to look like a mad square asking these lame ass dudes to the prom.”

“Yeah, well at least I won’t go stag,” I retorted.
